To be a citizen is a powerful thing. It provides us with an unprecedented sense of belonging because it comes with responsibilities, rights, privileges and entitlements. Yet, these days a ‘citizen’ is a rare term in the political lexicon. Over the past 30 years, it’s been devalued and replaced with the word ‘taxpayer’.
